To accommodate this shift, district lines are being redrawn to divide the county into five sections--a process known as redistricting. As a Spokane resident who cares about this community and those who live here, I’m grateful for new state laws that limit how and when law enforcement can use violence. When I see a police car in my neighborhood, I’d feel a little better knowing that police are mandated to de-escalate potentially dangerous situations before resorting to force. I might not worry so much about the safety of my neighbors — especially those who are disproportionately targeted by police. I would feel even better if I knew that local law enforcement agencies were embracing these changes. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

But a severe knee injury forced him to change course. Spokane Redistricting: Maps have been published.

The Spokane County Independent Redistricting Committee (IRC) released its draft redistricting plan on August 24. The plan includes four proposed maps for dividing the county. The Coalition for Creating 5 Fair, Equitable Spokane County Commissioner Districts has proposed a suggested map as well. No Change? No Money!

Next Monday (8/31), the Spokane City Council will vote on an emergency budget request of $114,200 from the Spokane Police Department to spend on unmarked vehicles, night vision hardware, and x-ray equipment, among other items. We need to see a shift from blank checks for police that don’t keep us safe to a massive investment in a shared vision of community safety that work for everyone. Tell them NO.
