Spokane Public Schools draft resolution on education equity: This is up for a vote Wednesday, June 10th at 7pm, Here is a link to participate on SPS's virtual school board meetings. Public comments can also be emailed to the school board at schoolboard@spokaneschools.org and to the Superintendent at shelleyr@spokaneschools.org!

What are we currently working on? 

  • Supporting equitable use of public school resources to support students of color in learning and feeling a sense of belonging in school.

  • Decreasing disproportionality in suspensions and arrests of students of color in Spokane Public Schools.

  • We work with the Every Student Counts Alliance Coalition and the Spokane Public Schools Superintendent's Work Group on Restorative Practices to move forward.

  • We are open to other work community members may see as a priority for Juvenile Justice but would need folks to help lead and communicate on those issues.

How/when does the committee meet?
The Superintendent's Work Group meeting schedule to be determined for next school year.

How does someone participate with the committee if they are interested?

What does the committee need to be more effective? 
More parents of color or community of color advocates letting the district know this is a priority to make our schools safer and more inclusive. Policy experts regarding racial equity in education would also be welcomed. Personal stories are always a powerful tool to addressing issues. What does the committee hope to achieve? To end racial disparities in student suspensions and arrests. To provide teachers and students the supports and resources needed to address behaviors and special need to keep kids in school, learning.
